emigrant

emigrant
emigrant, immigrant, migrant
1. An emigrant is someone who leaves his or her home country to live in another country; and an immigrant is one who comes to live in a country from abroad. The same person is therefore an emigrant on going through the exit gate at a port or airport and is an immigrant when given permission to take up residence in the country of arrival. The corresponding verbs are emigrate and immigrate. (Note one m in emigrant etc. and two ms in immigrant etc.)
2. A migrant is (a) a migrating animal or bird, (b) in Australia and New Zealand, an immigrant, or (c, in full economic migrant) someone who travels from one country or area to another to find work or an improved standard of living. An émigré (French = having emigrated) is a political emigrant, originally one from France during the French Revolution.
